LED industry players indicated that while the market for LEDs used in large-size TV panels is still immature and that Taiwan companies are still unable to enter the supply chain for high-end notebook backlighting, LED backlights have started to enter niche markets such as the medical and transportation sectors.

ĦĦĦĦAt Computex 2008, Taiwan LCD maker Litemax is demonstrating a 12.1-inch LED backlit monitor using its self-developed advanced optibond technology (AOT), which can reduce sunlight reflection and remove moisture. The monitor can withstand a steel ball dropped from a height of 80cm without any damage.

ĦĦĦĦLitemax indicated that it has already received orders from a Taiwan-based notebook vendor for the monitor and estimates to start shipments in the third and fourth quarters of this year with monthly capacity possibly reaching 3,000-4,000 units.

ĦĦĦĦLitemax also pointed out that home-use medical displays have also started to use LED backlights and that other applications that use LEDs in a sealed environment can be apply in the food and marine transportation areas.
